Start with the room, not the spec sheet
Before you compare a single number, decide what the TV has to do in your actual space. Sort yourself into one of three buckets and the rest of this guide narrows fast. Bright living room: big windows, daytime sports, the family watching from across the room. Here peak brightness and reflection handling beat perfect blacks, because nobody sees ink-black shadow detail at noon. Dark home theater: a controlled room, movies at night, one sweet spot on the couch. This is the only place where contrast and true blacks earn their premium. Mixed daily driver: a bit of everything plus a console and the morning news. It is the most common case, and the goal is a set that does nothing badly rather than one that wins a single category.
This matters because the failure modes are opposite. A panel that dazzles in a dim room looks gray and flat when sun hits it; a brightness monster throws distracting halos around captions and starfields in the dark. Pick the wrong bucket and you will notice every day.
OLED vs Mini-LED vs QLED
OLED lights every pixel individually, so blacks are switched fully off and contrast is effortless. It is the default for the dark home theater and for anyone serious about film and prestige TV. Current panels (WOLED with a brightness booster, and QD-OLED) are far brighter than the dim early sets, but they still lose to the brightest LCDs in direct sun, and static logos left on for hundreds of hours carry a small burn-in risk. Vary your content and it is a non-issue.
Mini-LED is an LCD with thousands of tiny backlight zones that dim independently. It goes blindingly bright, eats glare, and cannot burn in, which makes it the right call for a bright living room. The trade-off is blooming, a faint halo around bright objects on black, and it gets worse the fewer zones the set has. So count zones, not the "Mini-LED" badge: a few hundred zones blooms visibly, a couple thousand barely does. The number is rarely on the box, so look it up per model before you buy.
QLED with no Mini-LED is just a quantum-dot LCD on a conventional edge-lit backlight. It runs bright and colorful for the money but has no real local dimming, so blacks wash out to gray in a dark room. It is the value play for a bright room on a budget, not a contrast TV. Read what the backlight actually does and ignore the marketing tier names entirely; "QLED," "NeoQLED," and "QNED" describe dots and panels, not dimming.
Size, resolution, and brightness that matter
Size is the one upgrade buyers regret skipping. From a 2.5 to 3 meter couch, 65 inches is the comfortable mainstream, 75 to 77 inches feels cinematic, and 55 inches is the floor for a primary set. Buy the larger size you are debating; almost nobody returns a TV for being too big, and plenty wish they had gone up.
Resolution is settled: 4K is standard and correct at these sizes. 8K is a trap, there is almost no native content and at any normal couch distance your eyes cannot resolve the extra pixels. Spend the difference on size or a soundbar.
Brightness is the spec that changes daily viewing more than any other. A set that clears roughly 1,000 nits handles a bright room and makes HDR highlights actually pop; dim budget panels look washed out in sun and muddy in HDR. If your room has windows, pair that brightness with a strong matte or anti-reflective coating, since a glossy 1,000-nit panel can still mirror the window back at you.
Skip the spec war on processing and sound. Upscaling differs more by brand than by tier, but built-in speakers are uniformly thin, so budget for a soundbar instead of paying up for a model with marginally better drivers you will replace anyway.
HDMI 2.1 and gaming
If you own a PS5, Xbox Series X, or a current gaming PC, this section sets your shortlist. You want HDMI 2.1 ports that carry 4K at 120Hz, plus VRR (variable refresh rate) to kill screen tearing and ALLM (auto low latency mode) so the set jumps into game mode on its own. Check measured input lag, under about 15ms is excellent and most current OLEDs and good Mini-LEDs hit it. OLED's near-instant pixel response gives it a genuine edge in fast games, with no smearing behind motion.
The real trap is counting ports without checking each port's version. Plenty of mid-range sets carry four HDMI inputs but only two true 2.1 ports, and one of those is usually the eARC port your soundbar needs. So a console and a soundbar end up fighting over the same socket. With two next-gen devices, confirm two free full-bandwidth 2.1 ports before you commit, not just the total HDMI count.
When to buy: timing the price
TV prices fall on a sharper, more predictable curve than almost any other gadget, which is exactly the kind of thing the price history on each product page is built to expose. New model lines arrive in spring (roughly March to May) at full list, while the previous year's models get slashed to clear. A one-year-old flagship is rarely meaningfully worse than the new one and routinely costs 30 to 40 percent less, so last year's high-end set usually beats this year's mid-range at the same money.
The deepest cuts cluster in two windows. Black Friday and Cyber Monday in late November is the global low point; on most sets you can watch the price bottom out then and drift back up after the new year. In the US there is also a dependable pre-Super Bowl dip in late January and early February as retailers push big screens for the game. In Korea and Japan, expect parallel lows around the major year-end and new-year shopping festivals.
So the rule is short. If you can wait, buy a previous-generation set in late November, or in spring once the new lineup drags last year's stock down. Wait on anything launched in the last month or two; it has nowhere to go but down. If you must buy today, compare the current price against the trailing low on the history chart, never against list, because a "sale" off MSRP is often just the normal street price with a banner on it.
When to pick an alternative
Match the set to your dominant use, not to reviews of a room you do not have. Choose a bright Mini-LED if daylight floods the room and you watch sports and news; brightness wins over contrast you will never see. Choose an OLED if you control the light and care about movies and games, and stop worrying about burn-in unless you genuinely park a static logo on screen for hours daily. Drop to a plain QLED only when budget rules and the room is bright enough to hide weak blacks. And if a console is central, let HDMI 2.1 port count override panel taste, because the prettiest TV is useless if it cannot run your games at full speed. Pick for the room and the three things you watch most, then use the price history to buy at the low.
